SUMMARY:Old Wintergreen Day
DESCRIPTION:Due to the ongoing pandemic\, Old Wintergreen Day has been reschedule to Sunday\, July 4th\, 2021 for the safety of everyone involved. \nFrom Gene Hughes\, newly elected Wintergreen Historian:\n“The area we call Old Wintergreen with its commercial enterprises was the business and social center for the surrounding area from the end of the Revolution until the 1950s. There were two grist mills\, a store\, a sawmill\, and four distilleries with a magistrate to keep the piece.   \nThe Fourth of July 2021 will be the third celebration of Old Wintergreen Day. This is a Sunday afternoon when it was a tradition for the old folks to gather after church and sit on the front porch all afternoon telling stories and having a good time. There will be storytelling\, displays\, living history\, food trucks\, and music.    \nThe Fourth is our most important Patriotic Holiday. Come on down to Old Wintergreen at the intersection of  Rt. 151 and Glenthorne Loop at the Rockfish Valley Foundation to celebrate.” \nWatch RVF’s social media and website for more information on Old Wintergreen Day as the event draws closer.

SUMMARY:Callan Bentley's Geology Zoom
DESCRIPTION:RVF has been inspired by the pandemic to begin to share its knowledge of rocks\, water\, plants and animals through the zoom format. We held our first program with Chuck Bailey on March 21st. It was a great success with over 100 “zoomers” attending! Those participants were not disappointed as Chuck\, head of geology at William & Mary\, spoke in detail on the fascinating geological heritage of Nelson County. You can find a recording of that presentation on RVF’s YouTube channel HERE.  \nThe RVF geology committee is at it again. Committee member Callan Bentley is Assistant Professor of Geology at PVCC\, and he will be the host of another information-packed online geology zoom presentation on Sunday\, April 11th at 3 pm. This presentation will review the past 1 billion years of local history. Diving deep into the geologic past\, he will examine two major periods of mountain-building\, making now-dismembered supercontinents\, two episodes of rifting\, breaking up those supercontinents and filling the space between their fragments with new ocean basins\, and also periods of tectonic calm\, when sediments akin to those of the modern Bahamas piled up gently on the edge of the North American continent.  \nWhile the direct link to join the Zoom is below\, all participants are required to register by sending an email to register@rockfishvalley.org.  \nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88334571658?pwd=REtieXp5NnNtTm5MekZ2c2JvTFc2UT09

SUMMARY:Naturally Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Earth Day 2016\, the Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center in Nellysford is partnering with the Environmental Studies Academy (ESA) of Western Albemarle High School. Rockfish River Elementary 4th grade students will be the beneficiaries. \nOn April 19th\, 2016\, ESA high school students will be teaching the 4th graders about the natural resources of Nelson County. This first “Naturally Nelson” event will be held at the Natural History Center and Spruce Creek Park in Nellysford. \nA brainstorm between Peter Agelasto (President\, Rockfish Valley Foundation)\, Adam Mulcahy (ESA Director)\, and Leah Jung (a volunteer docent at the Center)\, this event is a pilot program for the Nelson community. The three leaders plan to expand the program to be able to provide environmental education to more school children\, environmental experiences for adults & families\, and a community awareness of the richness of Nelson County natural resources. \nActive learning stations will be set up along the Children’s Trail and the Academy students will rotate the 4th graders through the stations\, teaching them about watersheds\, water quality\, and more. The elementary school students will practice reasoning skills while learning to identify local trees. They will examine rocks from Nelson County to learn how rocks are formed and what types of products can be made from local rocks. \n“This is a win-win for everyone\,” according to Leah Jung. “The ESA students learn how to develop practical environmental projects and get teaching experience. The 4th graders get hands-on environmental education from people they admire and look up to…high school students! Nelson County benefits by having their children appreciate the uniqueness and value of Nelson County’s natural resources.” \nFor more information contact Leah Jung at leahbj@msn.com\, Peter Agelasto at info@rockfishvalley.org\, or Adam Mulcahy at amulcahy@k12albemarle.org \nThanks to:\n\n\n\n\n \nPiney River Quarry
