Post 14 — Invasive Plants
A plant does not have to look dramatic to cause big trouble
Fun Fact:
Invasive plants are species brought from elsewhere that spread aggressively and disrupt local ecosystems. Without the checks and balances of their native range, they can smother trees, crowd out wildflowers, and reduce the habitat value of an entire area.
Spot It:
Look for vines swallowing the canopy, dense single-species patches, or fast-growing plants taking over trail edges and disturbed ground. Invasives often do best where light, movement, and soil disturbance give them an opening.
Why It Matters Here:
Managing invasives is one of the clearest ways people can actively improve habitat in the Rockfish Valley. Removing them creates room for native plants—and for the insects, birds, and other wildlife that depend on those natives.
Invasive Plants
What Are Invasive Plants?
Invasive plants are non-native plants that harm our environment, health & economy. Because they lack predators, invasives grow quickly & outcompete our native species for resources. They can disrupt food webs and endanger native species.
Why Are Invasive Plants a Problem?
Invasives can quickly overwhelm properties by weighing down the forest canopy and overtaking our native trees, shrubs & plants! Over time, landscapes shift from a diversity of plants & animals to ones with a dominant plant that is unable to support beneficial insects & pollinators
