Post 3 — Hurricane Camille
One night of rain changed this valley forever
Fun Fact:
In August 1969, Hurricane Camille devastated Nelson County with catastrophic flooding and landslides. The storm remains one of the defining events in local memory, not only for its loss of life, but for how completely it reshaped families, farms, roads, and waterways.
Spot It:
As you walk here, imagine how quickly a quiet mountain landscape can turn dangerous when steep slopes, saturated soils, and intense rainfall collide. Valleys, creek crossings, and low ground all carry clues about how water moves when storms become extreme.
Why It Matters Here:
Camille is part of the Rockfish Valley’s environmental history, not just its human history. Remembering it helps hikers read the land with more respect—and understand why resilience, stewardship, and flood awareness still matter in this region.
