Post 5 — Pollution in Virginia’s Waterways
What happens uphill does not stay uphill
Fun Fact:
A stream can look clear and still be under stress. Pollution often arrives invisibly through soil erosion, fertilizer, road runoff, pet waste, failing septic systems, or excess sediment washing in after storms.
Spot It:
Look for the everyday pathways water follows: ditches, compacted paths, bare soil, parking edges, and storm drains. Anything carried by rain from the land above can eventually reach a creek, then a river, and then much larger waters downstream.
Why It Matters Here:
Water quality in the Rockfish Valley depends on small choices made across many properties. Protecting streams here means thinking beyond the bank itself and caring for the whole watershed that feeds it.
