Post 16 — Geology of the Rockfish Valley
Before forests and farms, there was stone
Fun Fact:
The Rockfish Valley’s slopes, stream patterns, soils, and scenery all begin with geology. Mountains rise, weather breaks rock apart, and streams carry that material downslope, slowly shaping the land hikers see today.
Spot It:
Look for clues underfoot and around you: rounded cobbles in streambeds, exposed stone, abrupt changes in slope, and the way valleys open or tighten. Even soil color and drainage can hint at the rock and sediment below.
Why It Matters Here:
Geology is the deep-time foundation for the rest of ENLIT. It influences where water gathers, which plants thrive, how land was farmed, and why this valley looks and feels the way it does.
